David Tumax is a christian artist who writes, records and produces his own music. His desire is to bring JOY, PEACE and HOPE to everyone through his music and songs that cross all borders. Guatemala February 1st- March 1st 2010 Monday, February 1st Got to the airport in Guatemala at 6:30am. We had to pay $102 in taxes on the CD’s and the power amp. Then, we got in a taxi that said he would charge us Q75 to take us to the bus stop, but ended up wanting Q150. We paid him Q125 and scolded him for lying. We got on a bus, paid Q120 for fare-even though it was really only Q110. Then the helper on the bus wanted to charge us Q200 more for our luggage because “there was so much of it.” We said that we wouldn’t pay more than Q100. He said that he wouldn’t take it and that he was going to take out luggage to the bus station office which was twice as far from Guatemala City as Quiacquix. We had the money to pay the Q200 but we knew that we didn’t have to pay it- so did all the other people on the bus. David called his dad who called his police friends in Toto. They met the bus in Los Encuentros, where we “discussed” the problem with the police, the bus driver and the helper. I accused the helper of being racists- for charging us too much because I am white. I made sure that everyone on the bus heard me and I told the helper that he is a liar. Eventually, we left Los Encuentros without having paid anything more. When we got to KM173 (the road that goes down to Dad’s village) Obispo (David’s dad) was waiting there with more police. Again, there was a discussion between us, the police, the bus driver and helper. We ended up paying Q100 to the bus driver and Q50 to the police for their help. Hopefully, the helper learned a lesson about being fair. Not long after that, we go to David’s family’s house, unpacked, rested and ate. Later that afternoon, David went with some guys from the church to buy new speakers for the church. The church had Q4100 for the speakers, and the actual cost of the speakers was Q5170, which included new cables for the speakers. We were able to provide the eQ1070 that they needed. Tuesday, February 2nd Today there was the inauguration of the new cemetery for Quiacquix. The whole village came out. There was food, music and lots of talking. The sun was so hot- both Salem and I got sun burned even though we had sun block on. The celebration started at 11am and continued until late at night. We stayed until 3pm. There was church in the evening. During the service the new mixer, power amp and speakers were dedicated. David also talked with some people at the church about building a stage. Wednesday, Febraury 3rd We took a truck ride into Toto. WE bought lumber for the stage, mom bought food, we deposited money in the bank for the LDC. We went to a restaurant called “Los Dinos” for lunch. When we were leaving, David started talking to 2 guys who wok for Channel 3- a national TV station. It turned out that one of the guys works on the local channel (TV and cable) Red 25. He had actually chatted with David on the channel’s website a while back and knew who David is. HE offered David an interview on Red 25 on Monday, February 8th from 7-9pm. Of course we took the opportunity!!! At 11, we went to Radio Contacto to talk to David (Marcelino) Lacan about the activities he organized in Toto. We waited until 12 noon, when Marcelino finally arrived. David had already had an interview on the radio, so he and Marcelino talked about the upcoming concerts. Then we went to Estereo Revelación for an interview at 3pm and then to Estereo Nueva Vida for another interview. After that, we went back to Toto, used internet and ate. We caught a ride back home in Miguel’s pick-up that was full of lumber- not a very comfortable ride! Thursday, February 4th We rested and had church in the eveing. Friday, February 5th I stayed at home with Salem today. David went to Toto with Eliseo to do errands. David printed the pictures that he took of the inauguration of the cemetery. We are going to put them in a photo album and present it to the church. The 110 pictures that David had printed cost only Q260 ($32- just 3 cents/picture.)! Saturday, February 6th David and I left the house at 7am and traveled to Tot with Jake who helped us carry our bags. Then we left Jake in Tot where he works and took a bus to Xela. From Xela, we took another bus to Mazatenango, then to San Antonio, Suchitepequez. Then we took a moto-taxi to Elias Batz’s house. We ate, rested and go ready for the concert at 6:30pm. The concert went well. There were about 60 people at the concert plus several who passed by and neighbors listening in. There was dancing, singing, teaching laughing and prizes. The concert ended at 8:15pm. Then we came back to Elias’ house, rested ate and slept. Sunday, Feb 7th This morning at 9am, we went to Radio Shaday for an hour-long interview during which we gave away 5 CD’s and announced the concert in the evening that was happening at 4pm at Iglesia Familiar Betania. The pastor’s name is Kenneth Martinez. The people a the radio said that we should keep in contact and could probably arrange to have a concert at here next year that would be broadcast over the radio. Pastor Martinez told us that he would pick us up at 3pm because the service starts at 3:30pm. He didn’t pick us up into 3:30, and we rushed over to the church and had bout 2 minutes to get ready for a TV interview. We then had a few more minutes after the interview to do a sound check before the service started at 4pm. The service started with about an hour of GREAT worship music. Then David had an hour to sing and I did a few activities to give away some prizes. The people really enjoyed the music and were clapping and dancing. After the service, we were blessed with an offering o Q189 and the sale of several CD’s. Then, I thought we were going back to sleep, but found out that we were actually going to another church service in Nawalate. We arrived at the other church only to discover that the power was out due to heavy rain earlier in the evening. The service had already started, and it was David’s turn to sing. Since there was no electricity, David listened to his music through the headphones of his Ipod while he sang. It worked out well even though the audience couldn’t hear the music. Near the end of the service, the electricity came back, so David sang a few more songs. After the service, we received another offering of about Q50 and sold many more CD’s. We got back in the pastor’s car and headed out. It turned out that the pastor wanted to take us out for a snack. We ended up at TACO BELL! After we finished eating, we went home and go to sleep at about midnight. Monday, February 8th The plan was that Pastor Kenneth was going to pick us up between 6 and 7am. It got to be 8am, and the pastor still hadn’t come. David called him, and the pastor said that the guest speaker from last night was still sleeping. He also said that we shouldn’t eat breakfast because we had all been invited to someone’s house for breakfast. We also knew that the guest who the pastor was taking to Guatemala City wanted to stop and take pictures along the way. When we found out that the pastor wasn’t going to be able to pick us up until 9am at the earliest, I got upset and asked David to tell the pastor that we would take a bus home. I wanted to get home to Salem and didn’t want to wait. The pastor said that we had to wait for him. I told David that the pastor isn’t our owner and we can go if we want to. David call the pastor 2 more time before the pastor said “ok.” David and I left the house, caught a bus from San Antonio to Xela, then to 173. We were home by 11:30am. That evening, we went to Toto at 5pm for an interview on Red 25, a local TV and cable station. The interview was at 7:30pm, so David and I did some other errands until it was time fro the interview. The interview went GREAT! David got to sing several songs, and we both got to talk on the show. We left the TV station at 9:20pm with a copy of the show on a DVD. Tuesday, February 9th We rested today here in Quiacquix. David helped Eliseo arrange the sound and music equipment on the new stage. Tonight we have church. Wednesday, February 10th Today we went to Toto in the morning to get groceries to make dinner for the family. We got back to the house at around 1pm and just relaxed the rest of the day. I made dinner for the family with some help from Mom and Annie. Everything turned out great, and everyone ate to their heart’s content. Thrusday, February 11th We rested and stayed at home today. Friday, February 12th We stayed at home today. A guy who was selling chicks came by the house today, and we bought 26 chicks for the chicken farm. Saturday, February 13th Another day of resting. There is church this evening at 7pm Sunday, February 14th We rested most of the day. At 3:30pm, we left for Paquí where David gave a concert at a church named Nueva Jerusalem. There were about 350 people there. It went well. Radio Contacto recorded the activity on both radio and TV and will retransmit it later. Monday, February 15th David’s birthday- 26!!! We went to Toto in the morning to play soccer with the students from the school were Eliseo teaches. David played for more than 2 hours. He had a good time but was VERY sore for the next few days. He also got sunburned. We happened to meet Jake in the park and all 4 of us (David, Jake, Eliseo and I) had lunch together. We got home around 3pm. David fell asleep and slept for about an hour. At 5 o’clock, we ate dinner- Beef soup- special for David’s birthday. Then we had cake that was given to David by the women of the church. AT 6pm, we had a meeting with the leadership of the church to talk about several things. When the meeting was done, we took pictures of the new equipment (speakers, stage, mixer, power amp) along with the people who came to the meeting. Then we went home and slept. Tuesday, February 16th We left at 5am for Puerto Barrios. We took a bus to Guatemala City, then Paul Tonetti picked us up in his Yukon and brought us to Puerto Barrios. WE arrived around 3pm, brought out stuff to the house we were staying in, then went to the radio station of Radio Shaday. There we used the internet then went into the town center to get some dinner. When we got back to the house, it was 7pm, and we heard a church service starting in a nearby church. WE decided to go check out the church with the hope that they would let David sing. We found the church- Asembalea de Dios Emanuel- we sat down, and it wasn’t long before a few people came to greet us. David told the guy who greeted us that we are here in Puerto Barrios for a concert on Saturday and on a concert in all of Guatemala. The man went to tell the pastor, and in a few minutes, we were told that David could sing a few songs. David sang 2 songs and I did 3 quick activities. The people enjoyed it and even bought CD’s. Wednesday, Febarury 17th We went to Santo Thomas this morning to see what is there. We had a nice breakfast then went to check out the beach. It wasn’t much of a beach, but there was a lot of water and boats. At 10:30am, we went over to Radio Shofar for an interview. The rest of the day, we did nothing. AT 6pm, we went to dinner with Paul and some guys form the radio. Thrusday, February 18th Today we did nothing until the evening when Paul took us to Domino’s Pizza for dinner with the guys from the radio. Friday, February 19th This morning we went to the river with several guys from the radio. It was very nice. Then we went to the beach. The water was warm and the horizon was endless. We came back to Santo Thomas and had lunch at El Bahia. The rest of the day we relaxed. Saturday, February 20th We went into Puerto Barrios this morning to go check out the place where the concert is tonight. David talked to the pastor who is in charge of the activity and found out that he would get to sing 2 songs- not the 30 minutes that Paul said we would have to sing. That was very disappointing, but we decided to continue and take the 2 songs. David did a sound check. We went walking around town and found a radio station- actually 5 stations all in one building. We talked to the manager of the radios, and he let David play 2 of his songs on the radio. He also gave an interview over the radio. The radio is called “Ke Buena 107.1” Puerto Barrios. Then we went to find an internet café and used the internet for an hour. We took a microbus back to where we are staying. We decided to stop into McD’s for lunch and discovered that they had a live Barcelona game on the TV. Of course, we stayed until the end of the game- nearly 2 full hours!!! At 5pm, we went back to the Gym where the concert was going to happen. At 6pm, the concert started with a local group singing a few songs. After them, the pastor introduced David. Then David sang 2 songs and explained that 50% of the CD sales from the evening would go to support 2 students who want to go to Bible school. For the next 4 ½ hours, there was more music and dancing. We were going to stay until the end of the activity but by 8:30pm, both David and I were so tired. Paul was going back to the radio station, so we caught a ride back to the house with him. David fell asleep around 10:30pm. Sunday, February 21st We woke up at 2am to go to the bus station to get the 3am bus to Guatemala City. We got to Guatemala City at 7am, then took a taxi to the Alamo bus station. We got on the bus and were at home in Quiqcquix by 11am. It was nice to be back home and in cooler temperatures. Salem was happy to see us. It had been 6 days since we’d seen her. We rested, ate and had church at 3pm. After church, the guys decided that they wanted to go play soccer. So, we loaded up a pick-up with the guys from church and drove into town. It took a while to find a field that wasn’t busy, but we finally did and the guys had fun playing. Salem came with and had fun running around the field. After the game, we came home, ate and went to sleep. Monday, February 22nd We stayed at home and relaxed today. Tuesday, February 23rd Today we went to Toto at 11am to do errands, then to go to lunch at Wilson’s house. We met Wilson through Radio Contacto. He and his friends have a worship band. We had lunch at 1:30pm and stayed at Wilson’s house until 4:30pm. Then on the way to the bus stop, we found David’s parents waiting for a truck. We stayed with them and got home at 6pm. Then we are and had church at 7pm. Wednesday, February 24th We relaxed during the day. Then we went to Toto at 8pm to play soccer. Thursday, February 25th We stayed at home and had church in the evening. Friday. February 26th We went to Toto this morning to do errands. Saturday, February 27th We stayed at home this morning and took a pick-up to Juchaneb’ at 4pm. David had a concert at a church in Juchaneb’ called Mision Evangelica Independente. Before we went to the church, we stopped in Toto to do some last minute errands. We also bought fried chicken and French fries for dinner! The church filled up with people. There were easily more than 500 people there. The concert was supposed to start at 6pm, but didn’t start until 7:30pm. The first group took a REALLY long time- nearly an hour- for their performance. Then it was David’s turn. He did a good job singing, and I got to give away a few prizes. The activity was supposed to end at 10pm, but because of the late start and the first group taking so long, the activity ended at 11:30pm. After 10pm, the crowd slowly started to leave. By the time 11:30 came, there was no one left in the church. We got back home close to 1am, and went right to sleep. Sunday, February 28th Today is our last day here in the village. David has a concert this afternoon at his dad’s church, Tabernaculo Bethesda. We’ve invited a whole bunch of people over for lunch today. Needless to say, mom and several other women from the church are busy making tamales and beef stew. At noon, we ate lunch with the guests. I tired to lay Salem down a little early for a nap so that she would be able to come to the concert (her normal napping time is from 1-3pm). She slept for 1 ½ hours and woke up in time to eat lunch and go to the concert. The concert went really well. A lot of people came and had a great time. The activity ended around 5pm. Then we cleaned up, visited and went back up to the house for dinner. I wasn’t very hungry, and Salem was tired, so I put a DVD on for her and packed our suitcases. David and several other people were enjoying dinner, looking at pictures of the events of the past month and having a good visit. We were all sleeping by 11pm. Monday, March 1st We left the village this morning at 7am in a MicroBus. We went right to the airport- 3 hours of driving. By 12:40, we were on the airplane heading for Huston. After a long day of traveling that was problem free, we arrived home at midnight. We gladly fell into our soft bed and slept soundly Summary of CD Tour in Guatemala February 5th to March 4th, 2009 David, Jenny and Salem left for Guatemala on the morning of Thursday, February 5th and arrived at David’s family’s home in the village of Quaqucix around noon on Friday, February 6th. Although the length of the trip to arrive in Guatemala was somewhat unexpected, everything went well and they arrived in Quaquicx just in time for lunch! The concert tour started on Saturday, February 7th with an outdoor concert for Radio Contacto. This local radio station had organized a music festival and invited several local singers including David. David sang 5 songs and even had someone request one of his songs, but David didn’t sing the requested song because he hadn’t brought the music for it. David also gave away several of his CD’s. Altogether, there were about 500 people at the concert. The next three concerts were given in San Jose Pinula. David, Jenny and Salem traveled to San Jose, which is by Guatemala City and met a man named Alfonso who works for a local children’s ministry named “Brazos Abiertos.” Part of this ministry’s outreach is to go into the local schools and present activities through which the gospel message is shared. On Tuesday, February 10th, David gave a concert at a Catholic school. Then on Wednesday, February 11th, he had a concert at two different schools. Overall, the concerts went well. At two of the schools, though, there was a bit of a problem controlling the smaller children in the audience. In those three schools, David was able to sing for nearly 2000 students. On Thursday, February 13th, David, Jenny and Salem traveled back to Quiaqcuix and had a day of rest before they got on another bus and headed for a costal city named Antigua Peru. When they arrived in the hot and humid city, they meet a local pastor named Eli Cinfuentes. This pastor and his church had planned a street evangelism event for the evening of Friday, February 13th and David’s concert was the main attraction. The pastor had also invited a local drama group to participate in the activity. This group started the activity and then David sang a bunch of songs and gave away T-shirts and CD’s. It was difficult to count how many people came to the activity because it was in a park, but there were probably 200 adults and children at the activity. Sunday, February 15th was David’s 25th birthday. That day, he gave a concert at his dad’s church for 300 people. David sang almost all 12 songs from the CD. Since the local radio station had been playing “Mi Gente” (David’s CD) for several months beforehand, a lot of the people in the congregation that day new the songs and were able to sing along with David. The next trip that David and Jenny took was on Wednesday, Febraury 18th to an internet radio station called Radio AZ. The two people in charge of this radio station are Erick and his mom, Ela. That day, Erick and Ela interviewed David and recorded it. The interview went well, and David was able to explain the vision that God has given him. On Friday, February 20th, David had an opportunity to play a concert at a local school were his brother Eliseo teaches English. The students were all excited about the concert because that meant that they weren’t going to have class that day. David sang and Jenny led a few games. Including all the parents and family members that came, there were 100 people at the concert. This concert was really fun because the students participated well and enjoyed themselves. The following Sunday, February 22nd, David was given the chance to sing at a church named Iglesia Bethaña whose pastor is Martin Jimenez. This was a really big church with about 500 adults. David sang 5 songs, and the people seemed to enjoy the music although it was very different from the songs that they were used to hearing in church. The last official concert that David gave was on Tuesday, February 24th in Argueta, Solola. This concert was given as part of a birthday party for the wife of Pastor Luis Escobar, a local pastor. David was surprised to find out that not only would he be singing as part of the celebration but he would also be preaching the main message. God worked through David’s singing and teaching and was able to encourage both the pastor and the congregation of 130 people. After everything was sang and done, the month that David, Jenny and Salem spent in Guatemala was a blessing and encouragement for everyone involved. Thank you, again, for your support. You are part of everything that happened in Guatemala. Without your support, we wouldn’t have been able to give away CD’s or bless the church in Quiacquix with a pair of much needed speakers.
